I really enjoyed this episode, lots of food for thought! I'm struggling with the paid/not paid debate myself at the moment... I noted your point that you consider that making your podcast available for free feels worthwhile. Ironically that's the content I make that I'd most like to be paid for! My podcast is time consuming and literally costs more than it makes - I wish I could fold it into the subscription model but I'm not seeing evidence (yet) of people making that work as part of their offering. Anyway, this post and the episode have certainly helped encourage me - thank you!
I think all writers deserve compensation for their work. There's a good chance AI will scrape every word we publish online and repurpose it somewhere else, so we may as well get paid for it up front if we've put in the effort.
As family responsibilities have forced me back to the United States in my home farm of Missouri, I think one of the reasons book sales are so hard to make happen by any ride her little Luna a new one is, I don’t see anyone around here reading. At least a book.

Thank you for this Penny. I recently made the leap from gainful employment to full time writer and have been amazed at how the industry (dys)functions. I see digital subscription as the best way forward for creatives and I'm about to test that theory by going paid on Substack. Here's hoping!

Yes. There are limits to the work we can pour into the tech industry without compensation.
